Mahidol University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Thailand and one of the most prestigious in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1890 by H.M. King Chulalongkorn as the first medical school in Thailand, it has since evolved into a multi-disciplinary university -- recognized for its outstanding achievements in teaching, research and professional services.

Mahidol professors and alumni have been the recipients of many prestigious national and international honors, including Magsaysay Awards, Outstanding Scientist Awards, Outstanding Invention Awards, Outstanding Research Awards, and Rockefeller Foundation grants, to name just a few. Approximately 12,000 undergraduate and 6,200 graduate students study and learn from more than 6,300 professors, lecturers, researchers and academic staff at Mahidol University.

Mahidol is one of Thailand's leaders in the "internationalization" of higher education, collaborating with numerous universities from around the world, as well as many international organizations. Students from 45 different countries are currently enrolled in various programs at the university.

Did you know… Mahidol University was named after Prince Mahidol of Songkla, the Father of His Majesty the King of Thailand and the “Father of Modern Medicine in Thailand.”
KEI students take courses at the Mahidol University International College (MUIC). MUIC offers more than 200 courses in a wide variety of disciplines. Courses are taught in English.

MUIC is located in Salaya, a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Bangkok. Salaya is 45 minutes by bus from downtown Bangkok and 10 minutes from the Buddhist Park, the largest city public park in Southeast Asia.

Degree students at MUIC are required to wear a uniform of a white blouse/shirt, black pants or skirt, and a MUIC belt buckle. As a visiting student, you are not required to wear the uniform, but in the interest of group dynamics, we ask that you consider it.

What makes MUIC different?
  • Founded: 1990s
  • Oldest and considered the best English-language college in Thailand
  • 140 professors and lecturers from Thailand, Australia, UK and other countries throughout the world
  • Enrollment: 2,000 students
  • 90% of student body is Thai; 10% is international, representing 20 countries
Mahidol University is situated on four campuses throughout the Bangkok metropolitan area, allowing the University to capitalize on the rich educational, historical, cultural and social infrastructure of the City. All the campuses are electronically linked by a state-of-the-art computer network, providing academic, research and administrative computing services.

The Bangkok Noi Campus, situated on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, and the Phayathai Campus, situated in central Bangkok, specialize in medicine and health-related disciplines. These campuses are home to the following faculties, institutes and centers.
  • Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital (the original medical school)
  • Faculty of Nursing
  • Faculty of Medical Technology
  • Faculty of Science
  • Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital
  • Faculty of Pharmacy

  • Institute for Innovation and Development of Learning Process
  • Siriraj Medical Library, with the largest medical and public health collection in Thailand

The Salaya Campus is newer and located 10 km outside Bangkok. The campus is situated on 520 acres of lush tropical scenery with landscaped gardens, ponds and streams. The relaxing semi-rural setting, within easy reach of central Bangkok, makes it an ideal setting for studying in tranquility, while still being able to access the myriad opportunities available in Bangkok. This campus has a full range of support facilities, including the Central Library, computer labs, MU administration building, indoor stadium, 5 swimming pools, Student Union, shops and restaurants, and student dormitories and condominiums.

The Salaya campus houses the majority of academic departments, research facilities, institutes and centers, and administrative units of the University.

It features a 350-seat auditorium, a 120-seat conference room, and a 150-seat banquet room.

The Kanchanaburi Campus in western Thailand was opened in mid-2002 with the main objective of expanding higher education in the upcountry region, in order to create occupational opportunities and improve the quality of life of rural people. In addition, the University plans to open two new campuses in the north and northeast provinces of Thailand, to increase higher education opportunities in those areas.

The teaching style at MUIC is similar to universities in the USA. Most courses will have a syllabus. Professors utilize lecture, discussion, and/or hands-on teaching, depending on the subject. Typical methods of assessment are essays and short answer questions, although mutliple-choice exams are also used by some professors The language of instruction at MUIC is English.

What makes MUIC different from universities in the USA is the classroom experience. Since the majority of students and professors are from Thailand and other countries around the world, students will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of views, interpretations and discussion from different cultures and nationalities.
Students are graded based on performance in class and ability to complete required coursework on time. Regular attendance is expected and students are responsible for all work missed during an absence. If a student has to miss large portions of class, due to illness or other problems, he/she may receive an Incomplete grade for the course.

Grading at MUIC is the same as at U.S. universities. An “A” is superior, a “B+” is very good, a “B” is above average, a “C+” is average, a “C” is satisfactory, a “D+” and a “D” are below average, and of course, and “F” is for failure. The school also implements the same four-point GPA system that is used by most universities in the U.S.

The final grade is usually based on several assessments, although it is entirely normal and acceptable for your entire grade to be based on just one final exam or project. (The US is just about the only country in the world where continuous assessment is the norm.)
MUIC has a diverse and international body of faculty and lecturers.
