Featured City: Dublin, Ireland

What makes Dublin special? Dublin is a dynamic city experiencing rapid changes and growth. The city has all the amenities of a large metropolitan area, yet retains a friendly, small town atmosphere typical of Irish life.

Dublin is a university town, rich with culture, entertainment and architectural interest. The socializing element in Ireland is characterized by the “pub culture” - the use of neighborhood pubs as community centers and gathering places, a place to go after work, to meet up with friends, go for a pint, unwind with a newspaper, conduct business, and catch a sports game on the tele.

Dublin is the center for Irish politics and one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. Major industries include computer software, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, brewing, textiles/clothing, food products, tourism and banking.

Today's Dublin differs markedly from that of just 10 years ago. The economic expansion has brought an influx of immigrants as well as artists, musicians and writers from Ireland and around the world. Dublin is an exciting city to study abroad.

In the News: Condoleezza Rice stresses importance of international exchanges in confirmation testimony.

Below is an excerpt from the Opening Statement by Dr. Condoleezza Rice Senate Foreign Relations Committee on January 18, 2005 in which she stresses the importance of cultural exchange and international understanding.

"We need to do much more to confront hateful propaganda, dispel dangerous myths, and get out the truth. We will increase our exchanges with the rest of the world. And Americans should make a serious effort to understand other cultures and learn foreign languages. Our interaction with the rest of the world must be a conversation, not a monologue. And America must remain open to visitors and workers and students from around the world, without compromising our security standards. If our public diplomacy efforts are to succeed, we cannot close ourselves off from the world."
