Program: Kenya, the Cradle of Mankind
There are more than 70
tribal groups and numerous languages spoken in Kenya, though English is the
official language and Swahili is the national language. Nearly 50% of Kenya's population is younger than
15 years of age, and the country has one of the world's highest
population growths. Three-quarters of the population is Christian. Kenya
has set aside 10% of its land for wildlife conservation, with
more than 50 national parks and game reserves. Glaciers are found on
Mount Kenya, Africa's second highest peak; Mount Kilimanjaro (on the Kenyan
border, in Tanzania) is the highest peak on the continent.
Wildebeest are the most numerous large animal, and every year there is a
migration of over a million
of them. Kenya is the regional
hub for trade and finance in East Africa. Nairobi means "the
place of cool waters" in the Masai language. 'Hakuna Matata,' made
famous in The Lion King, is a Kenyan saying (Swahili) which means 'No
Problem.'
You
can learn all about this fascinating country, while taking
discipline-specific courses (in the English language) at the top
university in East Africa -- the United States International University
(USIU). USIU is the first and largest private, secular university in
Kenya, and a multinational institution of higher learning. Enrollment is
2,300 students and KEI students live on the 20-acre, gated campus, 12
miles from downtown Nairobi.
